George J. Mavrookas: Bringing a Hospitality-Driven Approach to Behavioral Healthcare
George J. Mavrookas, founder and chief executive officer of Agape Behavioral Healthcare, is helping redefine behavioral health treatment through an approach that combines compassionate, clinically robust care with the service principles of hospitality.
Drawing on his family’s background in the restaurant and hospitality industries, Mr. Mavrookas has built Agape around smaller, boutique-style treatment environments designed to prioritize dignity, privacy, personalized care and a strong internal culture.
In recognition of his leadership and the impact of Agape’s hospitality-informed model of care, Mr. Mavrookas was selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who, a publisher of biographical profiles recognizing accomplished professionals across industries.
Agape Behavioral Healthcare provides medical detoxification and a continuum of inpatient and outpatient treatment for individuals experiencing substance use disorders, alcoholism, mental health challenges and co-occurring conditions. Since its founding in 2016, the organization has expanded to three locations and grown to a team of more than 100 employees.
A Hospitality-Driven Vision
Mr. Mavrookas believes Agape’s greatest differentiator is not its size, but its philosophy surrounding how treatment should feel for both clients and staff.
“At the core, the most important thing to us is the hospitality-to-healthcare approach,” he said. “We want to create a paradigm shift in the industry by building spaces that feel safe, welcoming and human, not clinical or overwhelming.”
That philosophy is rooted in his upbringing as a second-generation Greek American. His grandparents immigrated to the United States and built careers in hospitality and real estate. Growing up around family-owned restaurants, catering halls and a hotel gave Mr. Mavrookas early lessons in service, resilience and accountability.
After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration from Lynn University, he combined that entrepreneurial background with a desire to make a meaningful difference for individuals and families facing behavioral health challenges.
Culture, Environment and Community
Agape’s treatment environments reflect Mr. Mavrookas’ belief that surroundings can play an important role in the recovery experience. Select locations feature peaceful waterfront settings, natural surroundings and outdoor spaces designed to provide clients with opportunities for fresh air, reflection and connection throughout treatment.
Equally important is the organization’s internal culture. Agape Behavioral Healthcare was recognized among the Best Places to Work in South Florida for companies of its size in both 2023 and 2024 and received a specialty award for employee engagement.
“We believe we have to put our team, the company and the company’s culture first so our staff can, in turn, take care of the clients,” Mr. Mavrookas said.
Beyond Agape, Mr. Mavrookas remains involved in the South Florida community, supporting organizations including 4KIDS of South Florida and collaborating with Lynn University to provide internship opportunities for students preparing to enter behavioral health professions.
As Agape Behavioral Healthcare continues to grow, Mr. Mavrookas remains focused on the principles that shaped the organization from the beginning: compassionate care, exceptional service, strong culture and creating treatment environments where people can feel supported, respected and hopeful about what comes next.
